This is a limited edition print. 295 prints of this kind were produced. A set of 200 were numbered; another set of 35 were numbered with Roman numerals. A set of 60 were unnumbered. All of the prints produced were signed in graphite by Norman Rockwell.
Though best known for his painted magazine covers and illustrations for stories, books, and advertisements, Norman Rockwell was also a masterful draftsman who utilized drawing as an essential underpinning of his art. Rockwell's drawing process made it possible for him to envision every aspect of a final work before it was begun. Rockwell rarely began a painting at the oil-on-canvas stage. By the time a canvas was on his easel, he would have completed several stages of preparation, including the creation of sketches and at least one highly detailed tonal drawing to be traced onto canvas.
Norman Rockwell brought Ed Locke and Massachusetts state trooper Richard Clemens to the Howard Johnson's restaurant in Pittsfield to be photographed for The Runaway. In the decade's since the painting was first published, Clemens has seen it "become synonymous with law enforcement" conveying the mission to protect and serve. "Wherever you go, in state police agencies or law enforcement agencies, you'll find a picture of The Runaway hanging somewhere."
