An eleven-color lithograph, Back From Camp was printed by Atelier Ettinger in October of 1976. The edition, measuring 27.25 by 21 inches, consists of 320 impressions on papier d'Arches. 200 were numbered and 60 artist proofs were signed in pencil by Norman Rockwell. An additional 35 prints were pencil signed and designated with roman numerals. 25 deluxe impressions were also printed on Inomachi Nacre (Japon) paper.
It was a challenge for Rockwell to constantly dream up new and unique cover illustrations. He often looked for inspiration in his previous works and tried to bring new light to old ideas. When describing his August 24, 1940 Post cover, Back from Camp, he wrote that "This picture gave me the idea for an April Fools cover containing dozens of Props- all of them wrong. Common everyday objects compose the props in this picture. Perhaps there are too many of them but they all help tell the story of the little girl getting home from camp." -Norman Rockwell from Rockwell on Rockwell
