Norman Rockwell’s The Runaway was first published on the September 20, 1958 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. The original oil painting is part of Norman Rockwell Museum’s permanent collection.

Norman Rockwell’s boyhood experience growing up just north of New York City provided inspiration for this popular painting. Years later, Rockwell brought eight year-old Ed Locke and Massachusetts state trooper Dick Clemons to the Howard Johnson's restaurant diner counter in Pittsfield to be photographed for The Runaway. In the decade's since the painting was first published, Clemens has seen it "become synonymous with law enforcement" conveying the mission to protect and serve. "Wherever you go, in state police agencies or law enforcement agencies, you'll find a picture of The Runaway hanging somewhere."
