William Steig (November 14, 1907 - October 3, 2003) Untitled Symbolic Drawing (Dog Walk in Park). Pencil signed color lithograph, 22" x 30" inches.

A prolific American cartoonist, sculptor, illustrator and writer of popular children's books, William Steig studied at City College and the National Academy of Design in New York, and Yale School of Fine Arts. Finding work at The New Yorker in 1930 at the age of twenty-three, his drawings became a regular feature throughout his life. Over seventy-three years, until his passing in 2003, William Steig contributed 123 covers and 1,676 drawings to the publication.

In 1939, Steig released his first collection of "symbolic drawings" influenced by psychoanalysis and modern art, which expanded the boundaries of comic art. Steig often named Pablo Picasso as his favorite artist, but had also cited Paul Klee as a catalyst for his radical drawing style, both artists who had found inspiration in primitivism and African sculpture. In 1968 at the age of 61, Steig began a series of children's books including the Caldecott Award-winning Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (1969), Newbery Award-winning Doctor De Soto (1982), and Shrek!(1990).

In 2009, Norman Rockwell Museum organized the career retrospective exhibition William Steig: Love & Laughter including approximately 200 original artworks, reference photographs, and artifacts, which remain available to travel. Norman Rockwell Musuem is honored to preserve and share the largest public collection of William Steig's original artworks; his work is also featured in the permanent collections of other noted museums including Eric Carle Museum of Picturebook Art, Brooklyn Museum, and the Chicago Art Institute.

The purchase of any limited edition print is accompanied by a complimentary one-year Museum family membership with care and handling instructions for the object.
