Norman Rockwell's eighty pencil drawings, done for Massachusetts Life Insurance Company, first appeared in a series of national consumer advertisements sponsored by the Company during the 1950's and 60's. Because Rockwell presented an essentially idealistic view of American life, his appeal has remained widespread over the years. This appeal seems to be derived from the familiar believable traits of each of the artist's characters and nostalgic mood of their settings.
