Norman Rockwell 1894-1978) Our Heritage, 1950 Calendar illustration for Boys Scouts of America for Brown & Bigelow, 1950 Media print lithography on paper.

A nine-color collotype, Our Heritage was printed by Atelier Ettinger in June of 1976. The edition, measuring 25 by 33 + inches, consists of 295 impressions on Rivers BFK paper. 200 were numbered and 60 artist proofs were signed in pencil by Norman Rockwell. An additional 35 prints were pencil signed and designated in roman numerals.

Our Heritage was originally commissioned as the 1950 Boy Scouts of America calendar illustration. During World War I, Norman Rockwell produced a poster illustration for the American Red Cross which depicted a Boy Scout bandaging an injured puppy's paw. The Brown and Bigelow Company reused that image for their 1925 calendar, marking the start of a new annual tradition. In 1926, the Boy Scouts and Rockwell worked together with Brown and Bigelow on the production of the first of fifty-one yearly calendar images. The Boy Scout calendars were one of Rockwell's highest paying commissions.

By depicting George Washington praying and two Boy Scouts holding an open book, the painting reminds young citizens of their heritage. When striving to be the best they can be, the Boy Scouts should remember the ideas and sacrifices that paved the way for them. Washington's religious faith and his dedication to winning the war should inspire the boys to strive for a similar level of honor, dedication, and duty.

The purchase of any limited edition Norman Rockwell prints is accompanied by an Authenticity Certificate signed by our Museum Director, a complimentary one-year Museum family membership, and care and handling instructions for the print.
