Norman Rockwell, Tough Call (Three Umpires, Bottom of the Sixth), Saturday Evening Post cover April 23, 1949.
One of Norman Rockwell's truly iconic images, Tough Call pays tribute to one of the unsung heroes of baseball: the umpire. The illustration depicts three men standing in the middle of a ball field, deliberating over whether to continue the game in the midst of uncertain weather conditions. The original painting is now part of the collection of The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, where it has become a favorite attraction for visitors.
