    Details
    R. O. Blechman (b. 1930), Stairs Pencil signed limited edition serigraph print on paper, 18" x 14" inches. Cover illustration for Story (1994).

Story magazine, founded in 1931, showcased stories by new authors. This first version of the periodical circulated until 1967, but in 1989, the magazine was resurrected and ran through the Winter 2000 issue. During its ten-year run, Blechman produced illustrations for every cover of the quarterly magazine, a project that he greatly enjoyed.

Some of Blechman's Story covers have become important images in their own right. In Autumn 1998, Blechman portrayed the battle of Don Quixote and his windmills, a challenge between the pen and the sword. His love of and apparent ease of producing cover illustrations clearly shows in his work. From the happy go-lucky grasshopper fiddling in autumn instead of gathering provisions to a juggler one of Blechman's signature images, the illustrator shared his appreciation for words and images with all of us. At the end of Story's run, Blechman drew the author and magazine taking a final bow with a smile on his face, as if to say 'it was great while it lasted.'
