    Details
Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) Angel Fitting, c.1950s-1960s Advertising illustration for American Family Life series for the Mass Mutual Insurance co. c. 1950s-1960s Media print lithography on paper

The Angel Fitting print was originally created for the American Family Life series for Mass Mutual Insurance Co., and was reproduced in the August 3, 1959 edition of the Saturday Evening Post. The lithograph, hand proofed and printed by Circle Gallery, measures 26 by 20 inches. The edition consists of 295 impressions, 60 of which were pencil signed by Norman Rockwell. 200 of the prints were numbered and 35 impressions were pencil signed and designated with Roman numerals.

Rockwell's 80 pencil drawings done for Massachusetts Life Insurance Company first appeared in a series of national consumer advertisements sponsored by the Company during the 1950s and early 1960s. This black and white drawing depicts a mother and father fitting their daughter into an angel costume. Because Rockwell presented an essentially idealistic view of American life, his appeal has remained consistent throughout the years. This appeal seems to be derived from the familiar believable traits of each of the artist's characters and nostalgic mood of their settings. In Rockwell's own words, "Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed."

Rockwell's ability to move his viewer's emotions was prized not only by magazine art editors, but by advertisers as well. Like most Post cover artists, Rockwell painted advertisements for everything from Jell-O to insurance.

The purchase of any limited edition Norman Rockwell print is accompanied by an Authenticity Certificate signed by our Museum Director, a complimentary one-year Museum family membership, and care and handling instructions for the print. Payment plans are available. All artist proof purchases contribute directly to the Norman Rockwell Museum to preserve and present the art and legacy of Norman Rockwell.
