Norman Rockwell's eighty pencil drawings, done for Massachusetts Life Insurance Company, first appeared in a series of national consumer advertisements sponsored by the Company during the 1950's and 60's. Because Rockwell presented an essentially idealistic view of American life, his appeal has remained widespread over the years. This appeal seems to be derived from the familiar believable traits of each of the artist's characters and the nostalgic mood of their settings. As Rockwell once said: "Maybe I grew up and found out that the world wasn't the perfectly pleasant place I thought it to be I unconsciously decided that, even if it wasn't an ideal world, it should be and so painted only the ideal aspects of it..."
