Originally created as the autumn illustration for the 1962 Brown & Bigelow Four Seasons calendar, Boy and Father: Golf was printed by Circle Gallery. The collotype measures 26 by 20 inches, and the edition consists of 285 impressions. 200 were numbered and 50 artist proofs were signed in pencil by Norman Rockwell. An additional 35 artist proofs were pencil signed and designated with Roman numerals.
Norman Rockwell was commissioned by Brown & Bigelow to produce 50 paintings in The Four Seasons series through 1976, one of the largest series of illustrations on a single theme. He painted more illustrations for Brown & Bigelow calendars than for any other medium except the Saturday Evening Post. Boy and Father: Golf was created in 1962 for Brown & Bigelow's "Four Seasons" series of illustrations featuring four images depicting characters throughout an entire year of changing seasons. This image was used as the summer illustration, depicting a boy watching his father take a swing on the golf course.
