Boy with Barbell was originally created for the American Family Life series for Mass Mutual Insurance Co. This autographed print reproduction measures 14" by 11" inches on heavy cardstock paper. Part of a unique selection of exclusive autographed copies donated to Norman Rockwell Museum Store, this item was not created through established limited edition printmakers like Atelier Ettinger Inc. or Circle Gallery. Although the print is a copy of a reproduction, the signature is original in permanent ink. However, the image quality is highly contrasted with fine line work appearing faint, and dominant darker tones.
Norman Rockwell's 80 pencil drawings done for Massachusetts Life Insurance Company first appeared in a series of national consumer advertisements sponsored by the Company during the 1950s and early 1960s. Rockwell's appeal during his lifetime and beyond is derived from the familiar believable traits of each of the artist's characters and the nostalgic mood of their settings, as is evident in this work. In Rockwell's own words, "Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed."
