Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) After Christmas, 1927 Cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post (January 8, 1927) Media print lithography on paper

In 1976, Eleanor Ettinger Gallery hand proofed and printed After Christmas, a lithograph. This print was originally created for the January 8, 1927 edition of the Saturday Evening Post. The edition, measuring 31.5 by 24 inches, consists of 320 impressions. 200 were numbered and 60 artist proofs were signed by Norman Rockwell. 35 artist proofs were pencil signed and designated with Roman numerals, and an additional 25 deluxe prints were printed on Japon paper.

This print depicts a bundled up young boy holding a chalkboard, going back to school after Christmas has ended. The joy of the holiday season has passed and yesterday's toys are dragging behind him. Rockwell has captured the sorrow in the young boy's teary eyes, mourning the passing of another jubilant Christmas. He was once quoted as saying, "Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed." This seems especially true with this Post cover, as the days after Christmas are often overlooked.

The purchase of any limited edition Norman Rockwell prints is accompanied by an Authenticity Certificate signed by our Museum Director, a complimentary one-year Museum family membership, and care and handling instructions for the print. Payment plans are available. All hand signed reproduction print purchases contribute directly to the Norman Rockwell Museum to preserve and present the art and legacy of Norman Rockwell.
