Norman Rockwell (1894 -1978) The Art Critic, 1955 Cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post (April 16, 1955) Media print lithograph on paper

This limited edition offset print entitled The Art Critic measures 32 X 28 inches and was hand signed by Norman Rockwell in permanent marker in the lower right corner. This print is very detailed, colorful and in excellent condition. The Art Critic was originally created for the April 16, 1955 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell may have seen himself as a more analytical artist, such as the one examining a seventeenth-century Dutch painting in his 1955 Art Critic. Norman Rockwell once said he envied students who swooned when viewing the Mona Lisa because he never felt such passion. His original draft depicts a student examining painter Franz Hals' technique in a portrait of a Dutch housewife. In that study, Dutch landscape on an adjacent wall places the student in a gallery of Dutch artwork. But a recurring Rockwell theme-of fantasy and reality exchanging places-seems to have taken over the painting changed course.

The purchase of any limited edition Norman Rockwell print is accompanied by an Authenticity Certificate signed by our Museum Director, a complimentary one-year Museum family membership, and care and handling instructions for the print. Payment plans are available. All hand signed reproduction print purchases contribute directly to the Norman Rockwell Museum to preserve and present the art and legacy of Norman Rockwell.
