Because Rockwell presented an essentially idealistic view of American life, his appeal has remained constant throughout the years. This appeal seems to be derived from the familiar believable traits of each of the artist's characters and the nostalgic mood of their settings. In Rockwell's own words, "Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed."
Norman Rockwell's Moving Furniture illustration was originally created for the American Family Life series for the Mass Mutual Insurance Company. Rockwell's 80 black and white pencils drawings first appeared as national consumer advertisements sponsored by the Massachusetts Mutual Company during the 1950s and early 1960s.
