Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Norman Rockwell painted numerous portraits of U.S. Presidents, presidential candidates and their spouses in a series entitled I Paint the Candidates. The most notable works from this series include the now famous depictions of John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon from 1960. The present work also belongs to this series and was published in the October 20, 1964 issue of Look Magazine with the caption, "Before a painter goes to the White House, he had better get a haircut and listen to an expert explain politics."
