Norman Rockwell 1894-1978 Grandpa and Me: Picking Daisies (Spring) from the Four Seasons Portfolio, 1947 Calendar illustration for Brown and Bigelow, 1947 Media print lithography on paper

This ten-color lithograph, measuring 23 by 20.5 inches, was hand proofed and printed at Atelier Ettinger in December 1976. The edition consists of 110 impressions on papier d'Arches. 100 were numbered aerobically and 10 artist proofs were signed unnumbered in pencil by Norman Rockwell. An additional 35 prints pencil signed and designated with roman numerals were reserved for Rockwell. 25 deluxe signed proofs were also printed on Inomachi Nacre (Japon) paper.

This Brown and Bigelow calendar aimed "to convey something of feeling of the seasons by the poses." The variety of poses used for the old men and dog allowed Rockwell to achieve specific moods. He captured the quiet and reflective nature of fall and summer and the lively nature of winter and spring. -Norman Rockwell from Rockwell on Rockwell

When describing the piece Rockwell wrote that "These four drawings, done in Wolf crayon, are from a 1947 calendar which is something of an innovation in that each of them will be surrounded by an ornamental border. For example, 'Winter' will have a design of snowflakes around it. This treatment should create an esthetic completeness which many calendars lack. Billy Brown, a friend of one of my sons, modeled for the boy; and Charles Crofut, a village selectman, for the man." -Norman Rockwell from Arthur L. Guptill's Norman Rockwell Illustrator
