Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) Spanking/ Schoolmaster Flogging Tom Sawyer from Tom Sawyer Folio,1936 Story illustration for Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain for Heritage Press, 1936 Media print lithography on paper

Originally created for Mark Twain's 1936 edition of Tom Sawyer, Spanking was hand-proofed and printed by Circle Gallery in August 1971. The lithograph measures 26 by 20 inches, and the edition consists of 285 impressions. 200 were numbered and 50 artist proofs were signed in pencil by Norman Rockwell. An additional 35 prints were pencil signed and designated with roman numerals.

Illustrating Twain's novels influenced how Rockwell prepared for future paintings. "These aren't easy poses for the artist's models to hold," he said. "It was such poses that made me first turn to the camera as a logical aid…Fred Hildebrandt was my model for the schoolmaster." Instead of asking Hildebrandt to stand for a long period of time Rockwell photographed him in the desired positions. When preparing for this piece, Rockwell also enjoyed "picturing the girls so apprehensive and the boys so full of glee."
