Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) The New Tavern Sign, 1936 Illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, ( February 22, 1936) Media print lithography on paper

Originally created for the February 22, 1936 edition of the Saturday Evening Post, The New Tavern Sign was hand proofed and printed by Atelier Ettinger. This full color lithograph measures 35 by 23 inches, and the edition consists of 295 impressions. 200 were numbered and 60 were signed in pencil by Norman Rockwell. An additional 35 impressions were designated with Roman numerals and pencil signed by Norman Rockwell.

This title is especially memorable because it depicts one of Rockwell's kindred spirits from times past - the colonial sign painter. This was the second time Rockwell painted a colonial sign painter for the Saturday Evening Post, however the difference this time is that he included inquisitive townspeople looking on while he paints. The onlookers, most likely analyzing and commenting on his every brushstroke, are the larger focus of this work.

The purchase of any limited edition Norman Rockwell prints is accompanied by an Authenticity Certificate signed by our Museum Director, a complimentary one-year Museum family membership, and care and handling instructions for the print. Payment plans are available. All hand signed reproduction print purchases contribute directly to the Norman Rockwell Museum to preserve and present the art and legacy of Norman Rockwell.
