Ruby Bridges goes to school. 1964 Look. The subject of this Rockwell painting was the question of school integration - one of the most inflammatory issues of the day. It appeared in January 14, 1964 issue of Look Magazine. The editors of Look chose him to cover this confrontation because of his respect for every citizen, however humble. Rockwell's sympathy is entirely with the neatly dressed black girl. Her situation is made all the more poignant by the anonymity of the U.S. marshals assigned to protect her.
