Norman Rockwell (1894 to 1978) A Scout is Friendly
, 1943 Calendar Illustration for the Boy Scouts of America for Brown & Bigelow Co. 1943 Media print lithograph on paper
This limited edition offset print is an image rendered by Norman Rockwell entitled A Scout is Friendly for the Boys Scouts of America. The image is that of a scout reading to grandparents with grandchild and used for their 1943 calendar illustration. The print has rich vibrant colors with a white border in excellent condition and has not been conserved. An outstanding feature of this print is in Norman Rockwell's eye for detail that engages the viewer. The print measures 14 X 11 inches and is hand signed by Norman Rockwell at the bottom in permanent marker. In 1924 Rockwell painted what was to become a half century of calendars for the Scouting Organization. The yearly calendar was published by Brown & Bigelow, one of the nation's largest calendar publishers and featured a Scouting theme. In the early years Rockwell donated his services partly in gratitude for the opportunity they had given him as a young illustrator and partly in support of the merits of Scouting. Today the Boys Scouts of America own a sizable portion of the fifty-two calendar scenes which Rockwell painted. Most of the pictures featured Scouts from Rockwell's hometowns notably, New Rochelle, Arlington, and Stockbridge, where even the troop numbers were recorded in accurate detail. In addition to the calendars the pictures were used in February issues of the Scouting publication Boys Life The calendar series continued for fifty two years until 1976.
